I'm experiencing some problems with the server. It started out with some minor glitch with version incompatabilities between different versions of glibc, and has now escalated and made the whole system unable to start any programs at all, you can not even log in to the system.

Since the system is so badly broken, I decided to replace the whole vserver guest system (like a big chroot) with a new one. All users files are however safe and will be waiting for their users on the new guest system. Since I had to reinstall some of the system, I decided to also move the shell to another partition and increase the quota for all users from 10 MB to 50 MB (25 MB for homedir and 25 MB for websites).

I don't have any ETA for when everything will be up and running as usual, but I'm working on fixing the system right now. I'm also taking this opportunity to make some upgrades of lowlevel software and file system changes that I've been waiting to make.

Not all programs are installed yet, if you miss something just ask Independence to install it again. There might also be some problems with the websites since I have not had the time to fully test them yet.

Welcome to Blinkenshell!

This is a free shell account service. I provide shell access to my server for free if you can prove yourself as a worthy user of the service.

The service is intended to create a community with users who are curious and likes to learn new stuff about computers in general. This is a great place to be if you are looking for somewhere to learn about ["UNIX"], learn about programming/scripting or if you just want to use ["IRC"].

The server is located in my basement and is not intended for any commercial use. It doesn't cost anything to use and does not provide any guaranteed uptime, availability, quality of service or any warranty.

This website is based on MoinMoin wiki. You can edit the contents of the pages by clicking on "Log in" on the top of the page and then signing up for an account. By creating an account on this webpage you are Not automatically registered for the shell service. Read ["Info/Signup"] for signup instructions for the shell service.

We are now affilated with Shellsnet! http://www.shellsnet.org/

Server problems 18-19 December

I've been working hard all night and I'm happy to say that everything seems to be working again. However, all passwords are reset, ask Independence for your new password.

Since I had to reinstall some of the system, I decided to also move the shell to another partition and increase the quota for all users from 10 MB to 50 MB (25 MB for homedir and 25 MB for websites).

Not all programs are installed yet, if you miss something just ask Independence to install it again. There might also be some problems with the websites since I have not had the time to fully test them yet.

Current events

  • Server problems, more details above.
  • Blinkenshell is about to move to a new IRC-network because shellsnet is closing down. There is a new channel called #blinkenshell that's available on the IRC-servers irc.systemshell.net and irc.overloadx.net The new doesn't got a website or a name yet, but work is going on.
  • Everything is working fine, we are accepting new registrations.
